Housing in Meeker Co. like most rural counties needs some enhancement. With Meeker Co. EDA, partnering with the city’s in the county we invested in a housing study in 2015-2016. The results showed that there is a need for all types of housing throughout the county with an emphasis on workforce housing both single family and multifamily dwellings. The need for twin homes, senior buildings and lower income housing distributed in all our towns. Unlike many areas there is also a need for some executive type housing as well with the lakes and professionals in the region.
On Oct. 30th 2018 we along with Southwest Initiative Foundation and Meeker Co. HRA will be hosting a Housing Forum. This forum will help to educate elected officials, EDA’s, staff, and businesses on what tools are able to help with developing housing in the future. The forum will feature tools and real life stories of city’s that have developed the types of housing described above. The forum willl showcase the “how to’s” of rural communities developing the housing they need by using incentives, EDA-HRA, bonds, tax credits, and programs.
After the Housing Forum we will then look to the attendees to create a ” Co. Wide Task Force” to look at the options/strategies. The next step is for the Task Force to create committees to research the best practices. While each city will develop their own plans for housing the Task Force may share resources and consultants to develop housing together.
